Kondraivendhan

Author

ஔவையார் (Avvaiyar)

Traditionally dated medieval period (exact era debated)

Tradition attributes Kondraivendhan to the same later Avvaiyar credited with the Aathichudi and Moothurai, continuing her signature style of packing deep counsel into single, simple lines.

About this work

Kondraivendhan is a collection of 91 single-line maxims, traditionally taught as the natural follow-on to the Aathichudi. It takes its name from its opening line invoking "the king (Shiva) crowned with kondrai blossoms," and is typically the second text of moral instruction children encounter in traditional Tamil learning.
